- Hiking and viewpoints: Mount Marathon trails (choose your route wisely), Lost Lake, Tonsina Point, and easy coastal walks around town
- Water time: kayaking in Resurrection Bay, paddleboarding on calmer days, or beachcombing at low tide
- Wildlife watching: sea otters, seals, puffins, and eagles are common sights—bring binoculars if you have them
- Fishing and charters: saltwater and freshwater opportunities depending on season and licensing
- Local culture and learning: Alaska SeaLife Center, small museums, and community events throughout the summer
- Food and coffee stops: fresh seafood, casual breweries, and warm-up cafés after a wet-weather shift
- Winter-leaning shoulder season: aurora chances, quieter trails, and cozy town vibes as the crowds thin
If you’re new to Alaska, you’ll also find plenty of informal meetups—coworker hikes, post-shift bonfires on the beach (where permitted), and impromptu road trips up the peninsula on clear days.
